The Gardenia Jasminoides

Many people choose gardenias as the background in their landscaping plans and have various bulb flowers that pop up at different times throughout the year to keep flowers almost year round. This is another thing that makes gardenias so popular with hotels and antebellum homes where landscaping is part of the allure or even the main attraction. The Gardenia Bonsai plant is a form of Bonsai tree that grows wonderful white Gardenia blossoms. Gardenia trees are perfect for individuals who desire to have a flower garden in their back yard but don't have sufficient space or adequate time to really have one. The Gardenia Bonsai plant's leaves are such a dark and rich shade of green that they often appear being artificial. The very best factor about the Gardenia plant is the fact that the leaves are the perfect color to showcase the Gardenia plant's large white flower. The average size on the flowering Bonsai tree is eight to ten inches tall and also the boughs normally spread about ten inches.

The Gardenia plant is usually trained into a shape that closely resembles the conventional Japanese Bonsai tree. If you have time to prepare the area for several weeks, you can work in pine products, coffee grounds and water liberally to accelerate decomposition. If you do not want to work with the soil for an extended period of time, you can purchase sulfur or sulfates at your local nursery to lower the pH of your soil. If you use your water hose to water your gardenia and the water is alkaline, you may want to use acidic fertilizers and sulfur about once a year to keep soil acidic.

If you are among those people who have been searching for a plant that has an amazing fragrance, then you definitely have found it in the gardenia. For anyone blessed with a green thumb, your gardenias are going to be items of beauty with their white-colored scented blooms. This particular plant grows fastest in tropical climates. So if you reside in a tropical climate, gardenias should be abundant. Your Gardenia Bonsai tree will probably be happiest if you are able to maintain it outside during the late spring, summer, and early autumn. In case you can't retain it outside, you ought to continue to keep it near a window where it can soak up all of the sunlight it needs. It's genuinely crucial to not forget that your Gardenia tree needs water. However, it also grows best with some degree of shade. Trying to grow the plant in bright sunlight will cause problems in blooming, and leaf growth.

Some Types Of Orchid

There are some plant pathologists out there who are currently developing species of orchids that are immune to the said viruses. But until that day, affected plants must be immediately disposed of to avoid further infection of other plants. The best way to do this is by burning them. There is no sure way of telling that an orchid has a virus just by looking at them. Common symptoms are shared by fungal and viral infections such as black and brown spots. In time, orchids affected with viruses stop growing, will not bloom and eventually die. The only definite way of telling is by testing.

When using your hands or any garden tools, be sure to clean them thoroughly. Viral infection can be killed by using a bleach solution when cleaning your tools. A suggested strength is 10% from your pots to your cutting tools. There are a lot of different ways that you can produce new orchids. Most growers are able to successfully apply these methods, while other methods are too complicated to be done by the home-grower and must be accomplished in a lab environment. What you need to do is to cut one of the newly formed pseudo bulbs, keeping some of the healthy roots still attached. It should be replanted with the roots pointing down into a small pot, slowly packing the potting mix around the roots until they are completely covered, however keeping the pseudo bulbs above ground.

You will need special equipment for doing orchid propagation with seeds, as the work is very precise and must be done in an environment that is completely sterilized. Professionals are really the only ones that are able to propagate in this way, as a laboratory is really required for this method. The uniform color wasn't doing my orchids, with their huge variety of colors, any justice at all. Searching the internet for ideas, I came across a site called Eden Makers Blog, which inspired me to use recycled containers for orchid potting. There was an old galvanized bucket, which was the ideal thing for orchid potting. This added a different touch to the garden display, and I resolved to replace all the uniform pots with something more interesting.

Begonia

The begonia is a flower that is very popular in the Hawaiian Islands, but it is a flower than can be planted in most zones. You will find that there are many hybrids and versions of the begonia.
It is usually find in South or Central America, as well as, Africa and Asia. This is not a typical plant that you would find in most of the States or Canada, however, it can be planted in most zones. Often it will die after one year of planting.

This type of flower comes in colors of white, pink, red, and yellow. It is a very attractive flower and it can be compared to a rose. Often it looks like a rose in many cases, but you'll want to keep in mind that this flower is the typical flower that you would find in an English garden. It can become a little shrub-like plant, but you'll also find that this plant as a lot of potential in any garden.

They are light colored flowers with dark leaves. Often the leaves will look amazing too. They can come in colors and spots too. You'll find that this is one of the most amazing plants to have in your garden because it can be classy and elegant, but it also a bit of modernization to the garden too. It is everything that you could ever look for in a flower.

When it comes to having the plant around the house, they look great in a hanging basket, but they also look great in a potted garden. Often people will have begonias in their potted garden, because it's not a flower that gets too out of hand, but it's a fuller flower. You'll want to consider having this flower in the design of your landscape when it comes to having pots and planters outside.

Keep in mind that this flower is more of a shrub like, but it'll stay close to the ground and expand in the width more than height. However, you can always use them as bedding plants for your outdoor gardens.

Just keep in mind that there are different types of begonias and you'll find that some typically grow bigger than others, but you'll need to keep in mind that the temperature outside needs to be perfect. There are hardy begonias that will work for the colder regions, but mostly this plant needs the heat to survive.

Begonias are very lovely to have for any home or garden, and they work well with most other plants. You'll want to match them with other similar sized plants so that their beauty is not overtaken by other plants.

Ixora - a special flower

Ixora is a genus of flowering plants in the Rubiaceae family. It consists of tropical evergreen trees and shrubs and holds around 500 species.[1] Though native to the tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world, its centre of diversity is in Tropical Asia. Ixora also grows commonly in subtropical climates in the United States, such as Florida. It is commonly known as West Indian Jasmine. Other common names include: rangan, kheme, ponna, chann tanea, techi, pan, santan, jarum-jarum, Jungle flame, Jungle geranium, and many more. The plants possess leathery leaves, ranging from 3 to 6 inches in length, and produce large clusters of tiny flowers in the summer. Members of Ixora prefer acidic soil, and are suitable choices for bonsai. It is also a popular choice for hedges in parts of South East Asia, like
in Thailand. In tropical climates they flower year round.
Red ixora flowers are commonly used in Hindu worship, as well as in Indian folk medicine.
Ixora may be the most common flowering shrub seen in South Florida and 'Nora Grant' likely the most popular of them all. Related to the gardenia and coffee plants, Ixora is said to be native to Asia and whose name derives from an Indian deity
There are about 400 species spread from Africa to India to Southern Asia. For red color, ixora is popular in warm South Florida with blooms all year long, but maximum beauty is from late spring through the early winter months, peaking in the hot months
The many types used in South Florida vary with leaf size, plant height, flower size and flower color. Cut flower stems are long lasting brought indoors. Here's a nice orange ixora
Often ixora 'Nora Grant' is used as a hedge, but this is inappropriate. The leaves are too large to be a good hedge material and typical hedge pruning cuts off most of the stem tips from which flowers emerge. Best is to use Ixora coccinea for hedges
Not all ixoras are grown for flower color. For example, Ixora odorata from Madagascar (hard to find in South Florida) requires tropical shade, produces huge 10-inch blooms on a 4-5 foot bush whose attraction is also a wonderful lingering scent. Excellent for shaded front door porches or backyard sitting areas
Almost all ixoras do best in full sun, acid soil, free from nematodes, a moist organic mix that is also well drained. Ixora can endure some salt spray on the wind. Planted in shady areas or with excess water on leaves, sooty mold usually sets in . A common problem is alkaline soils in Florida, especially near concrete and pools, causing poor health, poor foliage and poor blooming. This is especially true for yellow and dwarf ixora varieties. For best results, mix Canadian peat moss as a soil amendment and always use acid forming fertilizer. Minor trace elements are important as well
Older ixora plants may be attacked by root-knot nematodes ...tiny worm-like creatures which bore into roots and weaken the plant. If you have an old ixora hedge and one or two plants decline, you may pull them out and look at the roots to see if this appearance is present

Flowers bloom to attract pollinators

Aloe succotrina. Photo by Gerard O'Brien.
Aloe succotrina. Photo by Gerard O'Brien.
We often grow plants for their beautiful flowers but, unfortunately, it is not us they are trying to attract. It is for the insects and other pollinators that flower colour exists. Plants want to ensure pollination and subsequent fruit production and this is the main reason for flowers.
How do they do it?
Often a flower is a certain size, colour or shape to aid in pollination through wind, water or to attract a pollinator. These different flower traits are called pollination syndromes. The different types of pollination syndrome can be generalised but with all theories there are exceptions.
Which characteristic attracts who?
Some plants are not trying to attract pollinators, but use abiotic (wind or water) means of pollination. In general these flowers are often small, green and not showy, producing large quantities of pollen to be carried often over large distances. It is mainly the wind-pollinated plants that cause hay-fever problems.
Other plants rely on biotic (living) pollinators and often have to attract them from a distance. This can be through smell (good or bad) and colour among other means. Some of these have become very specialised to attract a certain organism, whereas others are very general, allowing many pollinators.
Behind these syndromes is a complex evolutionary process that has made the flower the way it is.
Cool-weather herbs to plant now include dill, fennel, cilantro, sage and thyme. Cool-season vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, kale, lettuce and mustard greens should be planted this month. Plant strawberries now for spring fruit. Plant herbs, vegetables and fruits in full sun for the best results.
November is typically a dry month, so water new plants frequently until they are established. Established trees and shrubs can be watered deeply once per week during dry periods.
Fertilize annuals, herbs and vegetables lightly each month. Do not fertilize grass, shrubs or trees until spring.
Provide trees and flower beds with 3 to 4 inches of mulch. Be sure to pull mulch a few inches away from stems and trunks to discourage rot. Mulch will keep plant roots warmer and will discourage weeds.
